Chronology
It follows Cécile, a young woman who spends the summer in a villa in the south of France with her widowed father Raymond and his newest love interest, Elsa. Their rapport is vivid, a world of ease and languor. I give it two stars just for the beautiful cinematography and soundtrack. The rest of it sounds like characters in one of those lame American comedies trying on French sophistication. All that comes out is that eternally jaded, entitled tone that permeates the aforementioned films. Like Britney Spears reading Françoise Sagan. I’m not even a big fan of French cinema, so this isn’t a jealous defense, but simply conveying the pain of having gone through it. The ending is particularly clumsy, missing the opportunity for at least some mystique. Chloe Sevigny is one of the worst actresses of all time.
